Commercial Ice Melt is essential for any serious contractor.  You know that rock salt is great, but it just does not do the trick in all situations.  Like when you get an ice storm followed by really cold temperatures, you need something that can cut through the ice today, not when the weather warms back up.  This is where a large arsenal of commercial ice melts come in really handy.

Some of the best ice-melts are considered “hot melt.”  The difference with hot melt is that it is exothermic, rather than needing heat to melt ice, it creates its own energy.  This means that the hot melt works at much lower temperatures and can be really effective against ice.

Rock-salt is not going away any time soon.  The inexpensive cost to get rock-salt in bulk makes rock salt the primary weapon of choice for melting ice and helping tackle snow.  When the temperatures get really cold, most ice melts use a blend that is about 80% rock salt and 20% something else like magnesium chloride.  The blend helps keep the cost down while the magnesium chloride starts the melting process and the rock salt finishes off the job.

If you are a contractor, you likely already knew all that.  The problem becomes, where do you get commercial quantities of ice melt?  Should you pay way too much at a big box store?  Should you get it from a chemical supply company that primary sells cleaning agents and knows little about which ice melt to use when?

How would you like to buy your commercial ice melt from guys who started a company dedicated to commercial ice melt, guys that have experience pushing snow themselves?

At Snow and Ice Salt and Chemicals, Unlimited, you get the price you need and support from people who have experience doing your job. We always keep plenty of inventory in stock and during winter weather events, we keep the doors open and the lights on so you can keep serving your customers.  We have several locations in Maryland and we ship to your location as well.

So if you need commercial ice melt or any other snow and ice removal products, give us a call or stop by today.  We would be happy to serve your needs.

Snow, Ice, Salt and Winter

It is hard to think of winter in the Northeast without thinking of our friends: snow, ice, salt. Snow falls on a regular basis. Ice comes from ice storms or from melting snow. Salt follows the other two to keep us safe. The frustration for some people is, with other alternatives, why is spreading rock salt still the primary method for attacking snow and ice. We are glad you asked.

Rock Salt is “Dirt Cheap”

At about $50/ton for bulk rock salt for deicing, it is hard to come close to the cost of rock salt when it comes to fighting ice and snow.  Some other products costs more than 10 times as much to produce compared to what it costs to mine and prepare rock salt for spreading.  Don’t get us wrong, many contractors would be happy to spread the more environmentally friendly products, but their customers want the cheaper product.  So in the end, it is the clients that say price is an important factor in which deicing product is chosen.

Brine Doesn’t “Cut-It”

Brine is great as a pre-treatment or on ice, but when you are dealing with a lot of snow, brine solutions and even some of the dry rock salt alternatives don’t seem to cut through the snow like a good spread of rock salt.  When you have to load your salt spreader with one ingredient to work in the changing situations of a large winter weather event, rock salt continues to be a great, versatile product.

What About Rock Salt’s Bad Reputation?

Rock Salt gets a bad reputation not because it is evil, but usually because it is over-applied.  Contractors that learn to apply the proper amount of salt save money, the environment, roadways, and the properties of clients when they use just the right amount of salt instead of going with the “more is better” theory.  Rock Salt can be combined with other products to be less corrosive and to work in lower temperatures than it does when applied with no treatments.  Leveraging the strengths of rock salt while adding the strengths of other products creates a real benefit where everyone can win.

SIMA has been doing a lot in the industry in order to help contractors know the best spreading methods to minimize use of deicing products, but also to explore how we can do even better in reducing any negative effects of rock salt.  You can learn more about SIMA’s sustainable salt initiative here!

ComboTherm does an excellent job of quickly making snowy and icy areas accessible by generating heat even under severe winter weather conditions. It’s a great alternative to more expensive commercial products, and our clients that choose ComboTherm calcium chloride ice melt are consistently pleased with its ice melting power.

Ask about ComboTherm Calcium Chloride Ice Melt

While many ice melting formulas stop working under the coldest conditions, this unique formula is effective when you need it most. Our difficult northeastern weather conditions require a reliable product. When you can’t take the chance that someone will slip and fall or get in an auto accident on your property, ComboTherm is worth a closer look.

Here are a few things you should know about the product:

ComboTherm Composition

ComboTherm calcium chloride ice melt is at least 70% Calcium Chloride. This is the highest concentration of this powerful ice melting material of any competing product on the market. Calcium chloride is derived from limestone or from purification of brine. It also contains small amounts of Potassium Choloride and Sodium Chloride, which are simply naturally occurring impurities from the brine solution that makes up less than 20% of this product.

The ComboTherm pellets, also called prills, are just a few millimeters in diameter, making them ideal for fast and even broadcasting. When using ComboTherm, you’ll notice that some of the pellets are green. This doesn’t indicate that they are a different material than the white pellets. The green pellets help with visibility and reduce product waste by making it easy to see where the product has been applied on a white surface. The green color fades as ComboTherm works to melt ice and snow, serving as a performance indicator.

How ComboTherm Works

This economical alternative to more expensive ice melting products generates heat on contact with ice and snow. While ice melting products blended with rock salt start to lose their melting power at temperatures below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, the high concentration of Calcium Chloride in ComboTherm allows it to keep working even when temperatures plunge to as low as -25 degrees Fahrenheit.

Calcium chloride, the main ingredient in ComboTherm, works to melt ice by rapidly forming brine which lowers the point at which water freezes. This formula is superior to rock salt for melting ice because it is made up of two chlorine molecules and one calcium molecule. Most salts have only two molecules, which reduces their power to lower the freezing point of water. Calcium chloride’s hygroscopic properties allow it to attract moisture. When ComboTherm makes contact with snow and ice, it absorbs moisture, which activates the temperature lowering properties of calcium chloride.

Calcium chloride also works to prevent ice formation, so spreading ComboTherm before an ice storm or snow event is a viable preventative measure that will help keep walkways, driving, and parking areas safer.

ComboTherm Safety

This product is generally considered environmentally friendly and safe for use on all surfaces. However, it’s always a good idea to keep deicing products away from vegetation, lawns, and gardens. Repeated and prolonged exposure to ComboTherm can cause premature corrosion of metal. So be sure to ask for more information about use with reinforced concrete.

If ComboTherm comes in direct contact with skin, it may cause mild irritation depending on the individual’s tolerance to salt products. If the product comes in contact with broken skin, it may cause pain, redness, and itching. Rinsing the affected area thoroughly with water will bring some relief. In the case of a severe reaction, it’s important to contact a medical professional for advice right away.

As with all ice-melting products, it’s a common-sense safety precaution to keep ComboTherm calcium chloride ice melt away from the eyes. This product may produce a small amount of dust that should not be inhaled. Because ComboTherm is harmful if large amounts are swallowed, it is considered a Hazardous Material by OSHA. It is actually a common food additive in very small amounts and is generally recognizes as safe (GRAS) by the FDA in the United States.

If this product comes into direct contact with broken skin or eyes, thoroughly washing the area with water will likely prevent problems. Be sure to contact a physician right away if serious irritation occurs.

When using ComboTherm, prevent irritation or injury by wearing appropriate eye protection, protective clothing, and gloves. Continued or prolonged exposure to ComboTherm dust can cause problems with mucus membranes or chronic dermatitis. If ComboTherm dust gets on clothing, simply launder them before wearing again.

ComboTherm Storage Tips

ComboTherm produces heat when it comes into contact with moisture. It’s important to store the product in a dry place. Pay attention to the atmospheric moisture of the storage area, as well. In humid conditions, seal ComboTherm calcium chloride ice melt in an airtight container to prevent it from generating heat and clumping, and to retain its ice-melting power.

ComboTherm should be stored in an area with good ventilation for the safety of people and animals in the area. This product is stable under normal temperatures and pressures, so it does not require any specific precautions when in storage.

ComboTherm is just one of the many products we offer for effective snow and ice removal under extreme conditions here at Snow & Ice Salt & Chemicals Unlimited. We’re here to help you choose the best option to keep your customer’s walkways, driveways, and parking lots safe and clear.

Contact us today for more information about choosing the best snow and ice clearing products for your snow removal company. We are open 24/7; before, during, and after the storm.

It’s no secret that most ice melt products can be hard on the environment, especially if they are not properly applied. Run off from harsh products or over-spreading can be damaging to plants, animals and even people. But if you are a commercial snow contractor looking for an eco-friendly ice melt, look no further – we are happy to be your Calcium Magnesium Acetate Supplier. Why use Calcium Magnesium Acetate? Let’s take a look.

What is Calcium Magnesium Acetate Ice Melt?

Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA) from Snow & Ice Salt & Chemicals Unlimited, LLCCalcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA) is an environmentally friendly alternative ice melt chemical when compared to harsher products like Magnesium Chloride and Rock Salt. It does not contain urea, chloride, or nitrogen and has minimal impact on storm water run off.

While the price is somewhat higher than other products, CMA is biodegradable and does not contaminate the environment. It’s less corrosive than other products too, making it easier on concrete and asphalt. In fact, the Calcium Magnesium Acetate that we supply to snow removal companies is as corrosive as tap water! And while it can leave a residue after being applied, that residue does not track easily inside buildings so it’s of low concern and it actually helps by requiring fewer applications.

Calcium Magnesium Acetate Data Sheet

When to use Calcium Magnesium Acetate Ice Melt

It is best to apply CMA after snow or icing begins. It is effective at melting snow and ice down to about 15°F, which is about the same as rock salt. It can be used to offset the corrosive effects of chlorides and enhance deicing performance when blended with rock salt.

Calcium Magnesium Acetate works differently than other ice melts. When applied to snow, CMA keeps snow particles from adhering to each other or to the surface. It does not create a brine like rock salt. So when using CMA, snow is usually lighter and drier which improves traction. For the best results, Calcium Magnesium Acetate should be applied early in the storm, to prevent snow from packing down hard and bonding to the surface. This makes it much easier to removal snow and ice later.

The fact that Calcium Magnesium Acetate doesn’t produce a running brine means that it doesn’t move off the surface like other deicing products and it adheres to the surface better. Because of this, fewer applications are needed of this product. Studies show that surfaces treated with Calcium Magnesium Acetate often exhibit anti-icing characteristics in subsequent storms.

How to Apply Calcium Magnesium Acetate Ice Melt

As mentioned above, Calcium Magnesium Acetate should be applied early in a storm before much snow or ice has fallen. This is essential for a “bottom up” application that keeps falling precipitation from adhering to the surface. It is recommended to start with a heavier application and taper off as time goes on.

Typical application rates:

  • 250 to 400 pounds per lane mile
  • 5 to 15 pounds per thousand square feet
  • 20 to 40 grams per square meter

Calcium Magnesium Acetate’s bulk density is about 40 pounds per cubic foot compared to 70 pounds per cubic foot for rock salt. Since CMA is lighter, applications based on weight will appear to have 75% more pellets on the road surface compared to an equivalent application of salt.

Order from a Calcium Magnesium Acetate Supplier

If you would like to order Calcium Magnesium Acetate, we keep a powerful CMA product from Cryotech in stock and available for shipping or pick up 24/7 at our facility in Bethesda, MD. Cryotech CMA ® Solid Commercial Deicer contains 96% hydrated Calcium Magnesium and other acetates, and less than 4% water-insoluble material. According to Cryotech, “To receive the maximum corrosion protection benefit from CMA deicer blends, it is important to verify the amount of CMA being used in the mixture by checking labels and product data sheets. Cryotech CMA is the only commercially available pure calcium magnesium acetate produced and sold in the United States.”

The success of a snow removal company hinges on how quickly urgent needs can be met by their team and product suppliers. Snow & Ice Salt & Chemicals Unlimited, LLC has become Maryland’s most trusted source for snow removal products. Through our accessibility, scalability, and ability to serve as a one stop shop for our customers, we have separated ourselves from other snow removal product suppliers as the best Ice Melt Distributor. Here’s how:

10 Reasons We Are The Best Ice Melt Distributor & Snow Removal Tools Supplier

1) We are accessible 24/7. Accessibility is critical in the snow and ice removal industry. When a winter snow storm strikes, we want to be the first number on your speed dial. Unlike our competitors, who often have limited work hours, our offices are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We are always ready to meet the demands of our customers.

2) Three physical locations. The expanding ecommerce industry has made it more difficult than ever to distinguish resellers from true suppliers who actually have a physical address with inventory on hand. Nothing is more frustrating than discovering that you are only dealing with a product reseller who does not actually have any inventory available. Unlike some of our competitors, we have three physical locations, each of which is stocked with the products that our customers need. Our facilities are located in the following areas of Maryland:

  • Bethesda (5200 River Road, Building 6)
  • Silver Spring
  • Cambridge

3) We serve customers across the U.S. While the majority of our customers are located in Maryland, we receive regular visits from our customers in Washington DC, Virginia, and Pennsylvania who need high quality ice melt and snow removal equipment. Additionally, we have the capacity to deliver snow removal chemicals and tools to customers across the U.S.

4) Our scalability enables us to fill orders of all sizes. Unlike some of our competitors, we have the scalability to fill orders of all sizes. Our team of snow removal experts knows the importance of monitoring weather trends and maintaining a plentiful supply of snow removal products. We work hard to forecast product needs so we will be sure to have everything you need on hand and available for pickup when you complete your purchase.

5) We offer ice melt chemicals and snow removal tools. Our ability to serve as a one stop shop for our customers sets us apart from other local companies. By not having to purchase ice melt and snow removal tools from two separate vendors, you save money, gasoline, and time. Below is a snapshot of our two product categories and our most popular items in each category:

  • Snow removal tools: Work gloves, driveway markers, snow shovels, snow pushers, and salt spreaders
  • Snow removal chemicals: Rock Salt, Sodium Acetate, hot melt deicer, Magnesium Chloride (pellets, pastilles, and flakes) and Sodium Chloride (pellets, flakes and ComboTherm)

6) Protecting the environment is a top priority for us. In addition to helping our customers keep property clean and safe by removing snow, we offer a variety of safe, biodegradable ice melt products that are safe for the environment. Sodium Acetate (NAAC), for instance, is a good option for environmentally-conscious customers. NAAC is a fast acting, eco-friendly ice melt that is biodegradable at low temperatures.

7) We offer three ways for you to contact us. We recognize that our customers often have a preferred means of communicating with us and completing their purchases. We therefore offer three ways of reaching us:

  • Contact us by phone 24/7 at 301-986-5859
  • Submit an online request through our website
  • Make a personal visit to one of our three physical locations. We encourage you to visit us in person to see our extensive inventory of products. We are happy to introduce you to exciting new product offerings that we have added to our inventory.

8) Customers always receive professional guidance and support from us. We are more than just a product supplier. Our customer base is expansive and varied, and each customer has a unique set of needs. We provide recommendations to customers as necessary to ensure their satisfaction with our products. For instance, customers that service areas with multiple pets and small children may wish to consider magnesium chloride pellets over Rock Salt. Magnesium chloride pellets are less corrosive and safer for areas frequented by pets and people.

9) Our goal is to be fully stocked at all times. As an expert in the snow removal product industry, it is our job to remain knowledgeable about weather trends and stock our products in accordance with forecasted needs. When you walk through the door of one of our locations, we strive to have your order ready in a matter of minutes.

10) We have the experience to safely pack and ship large orders of ice melt. Our team is accustomed to filling large ice melt orders for customers well outside the Maryland and Washington DC area. We know how to professionally package ice melt for safe transport by truck to customers in virtually every region of the U.S.

As your trusted solution for ice melt chemicals and snow removal products, we strive to be the most accessible provider in the United States. Please contact us to learn how we can fulfill all of your snow and ice removal needs. We are available to assist you 24/7 – even right in the midst of a snowstorm. At Snow & Ice Salt, we pride ourselves on offering an array of products so that our Snow Removal Company managers can find exactly what they’re looking for. But tools are only as effective as the way you use them — so to make sure that you’re getting the most bang for your buck, here are some tips to keep in mind when you use Hot Melt Deicer

First, what is Hot Melt?

Hot Melt deicer is a premium blend of 80% sodium chloride and 20% magnesium chloride. This combination creates a superior ice melting product that works quicker and at lower temperatures then other ice melts. It is generally used for sidewalk ice management where the most meticulous clean surface needs to be maintained.

Hot Melt Deicer Facts & Usage Tips

It can handle the cold.

The temperature range of any deicer depends on the chemicals that make it up. Hot Melt is composed of 80% Sodium Chloride and 20% Magnesium Chloride. According to this ice melt guide, Magnesium Chloride is effective well below 0 degrees. This makes it a perfect choice for especially harsh conditions, including those brutally cold East Coast winters.

Take advantage of its design.

Hot Melt is specially designed for sidewalk maintenance. That means the blend is intended to be most effective on concrete, so you’ll want to use other products on asphalt, flagstone, or brick to avoid damage. For companies that need to clear considerable areas of sidewalk, however, there’s nothing better.

A little goes a long way.

One of Hot Melt’s main perks is that it provides unusually long residual action. Apply it to sidewalks before snow arrives or just after it’s been cleared. Hot Melt will begin melting snow immediately, and continue working long after other deicers quit.

With these tips in mind, you’ll be able to use this powerful product to its full potential. Keep an eye on our blog for other feature articles on our products. If you need to order Hot Melt Deicer, or if you just want to know more about how we can help your snow removal business thrive this winter, contact us today.

As you prepare for winter, it may be time to consider replenishing or adding snow removal tools that help your team get the job done fast and with less injuries. One tool used by make snow removal contractors is a snow shovel with wheels, often called a rolling snow pusher. A rolling snow pusher is a relatively low cost tool that has been proven to be easier on the back and faster for moving light layers of snow ultra fast.

What is a Rolling Snow Pusher?

A rolling snow pusher is a tool for pushing snow aside instead of lifting it away from the area. It looks like a snow plow and a push-mower combined. Snow pushers can help you move a large amount of snow with little effort. Commercial quality rolling snow pushers have high impact blades and galvanized steel handles.

Benefits of Snow Pushing vs. Snow Shoveling

Shoveling snow can be a hassle. Heavy stainless steel shovels may last forever but can cause your muscles to tire out long before your job is done. Snow pushers are designed to be easier on your body, reducing fatigue and strain on back muscles. It has also shown to be less strenuous on your heart. The model we carry is easy to use, durable, and affordable. It is backed by a full one-year warranty by the manufacturer and made in the U.S.A. The product’s blade is constructed from glass filled impact modified PP resin with a bracket molded from impact modified nylon. Our snow pusher is an angled 36″ blade perfect for wind-rowing snow and a galvanized steel handle coated with a powder finish. This tool should be stored in a dry place when not in use.

This tool was designed to be used primarily with commercial applications. For more information about how snow pushers can help you move snow, please contact us.

There are several categories of ice melt products to choose from today. Calcium chloride ice melt products are intended for snow and ice removal in extreme conditions. These work best in climates like ours here in Bethesda, MD and the Washington DC area. Most of the time, calcium chloride ice melt products come in three basic varieties: pellets, flakes, and blends.

Calcium Chloride Ice Melt Products

  • Calcium Chloride Pellets, such as PELADOW™ PREMIER, is a fast-acting de-icer that is effective under the coldest temperatures, to -25°F. It has a 90% concentration of calcium chloride. This results in a stronger exothermic reaction than further diluted products. PELADOW™ is best applied for the lowest temperature situations.
  • Calcium Chloride Flakes, like DOWFLAKE™, tend to have a lower concentration of the active ingredient. However, DOWFLAKE™ has 10% more calcium chloride than competing flake brands. The key difference to the pellet form is that these flakes have a flat shape that allows them to adhere to surfaces. For extreme weather situations where movement could be an issue for pellets, flakes are the superior ice removal solution.
  • Calcium Chloride Blends, including COMBOTHERM™, have slightly lower concentrations of calcium chloride, with additives included to assist with application. COMBOTHERM™ includes a greenish additive that serves as a visual aid over snow and ice. This prevents users from applying too much of the product. It’s a good choice for de-icing jobs in very cold weather, in situations where neophytes need an indicator for proper application. It can also help experienced snow removal workers avoid waste if visibility is a problem due to weather or lighting.

If you own or work at a snow removal company you know the risks that every one of your workers take during each winter storm. But aside from safety training, are they equipped with the best snow removal tools on the market? Winter work gloves are something not to overlook. Professional grade winter work gloves can make a big difference in making the job safer and more efficient. According to the popular website WebMD, over 11,000 people show up at the nation’s hospitals each year for treatments of injuries sustained while clearing snow.

Their research found that the most common cause of injury is overworking the muscles, slipping on ice, and believe it or not, being hit with a shovel. As for the exact nature of the injuries, soft tissue (muscle, ligament, tendon) injuries  topped the list, especially in the lower back area. Heart attacks are the dangers most people think about when they think of shoveling snow. However, heart related problems accounted for only 7% of injuries.

Cuts and broken bones, especially on the hands and arms are reported to have accounted for a lot of the emergency room visits. But curiously enough, there is no mention of one that is most obvious – frostbite.

Frostbite

The Center for Disease Control, (CDC), however does mention frostbite in a feature article on its website. Frostbite occurs when an exposed part of the body freezes. This most often happens with fingers, toes, ears, and noses. The freezing is so severe that it can cause permanent tissue damage and in the most severe cases, necessitate amputation. The colder it is, the sooner frostbite can attack. The CDC’s advice is plain and simple, avoid frostbite by wearing warm clothing that is right for the weather and provides protection.
